Time Management Strategies – Common Mistakes in Time Management

So what are 3 time management strategies? The answer to that is not so cut and dried, but rather depends on who you ask. For some people a simple one-page list of what is most important to accomplish each day is all that is needed to succeed, others will tell you that you need to spend at least thirty minutes a day working through a time management plan, devise a vision for your business and devise a work schedule that gets you what you need done. Then there are those who say that all you need to do is get rid of the distractions and focus on the important things. A third group might say that you just need to be disciplined, have the right attitude and discipline and follow through.

The truth about these 3 time management strategies is they are really all just ways of looking at the big picture. When we talk about the big picture we are talking about your career, and your life in general. And often what seems like small time management issues can actually set you up for bigger problems down the road. Let’s look at a few common mistakes that people make when they try to manage their time.

First Strategy

The first of these 3 time management strategies is called ‘not giving enough value’. This is where people think that they should give more than they get. For example, you may hear someone say that you should consider quitting your job if you are not getting any more hours per week. The problem with this statement is that you have already used up more hours than you are likely to get more hours of work in the future. So when you give up your job you will still be having the same amount of experience as you did before even considering quitting.

Second One 

The next of the time management strategies that seems to be advocated the most is called self-care. This is where you take care of yourself in order to make sure that you have less stress. Some people actually do this by taking care of themselves physically by exercising or working out. But then there are those that just say that taking care of yourself is much more important. The problem with this is that not everybody chooses to do this, and that means that they are not benefiting from the amount of self-care that they are doing.

Third One 

The third most common mistake that people make is to not prioritise their tasks appropriately. This is a big one that affects all of the other time management strategies that people follow. The common mistake here is that people prioritise tasks that are closer to their current goals. If you are trying to write an essay, and you know that you only have 3 minutes to finish it, but you try and start doing it on the smallest task first, then chances are you will end up wasting a lot of time.

Fourth One 

The fourth time management strategies mistake that I am going to talk about is time boxing. The big mistake that people make is that they try and complete as many tasks as possible in the least amount of time. This is bad because there is only so much time that you can work with. This is where time boxing comes in, and this is a great time management strategy.

Fifth One 

The fifth mistake that I am going to talk about is prioritising. One of the most common time management strategies, is to keep your priorities straight. This means that instead of prioritising, you want to look at the biggest distractive things first, and work on eliminating them. This is good, because if you keep focusing on these kinds of distractions, you will quickly end up with a to-do list that has nothing interesting in it, and this is bad.


The final common mistake that I am going to talk about is not prioritising. If you want to be effective with your time management, you need to prioritise. This is probably one of the most important pro tips that I can give you, and it is very easy to do. Just simply take everything on your to-do list, and break it down into the most important parts of the day, and then spend the rest of the time working towards eliminating those tasks.
