Practical Application Of The Pomodoro Technique

The collective knowledge about the well-known “Pomodoro Technique” has been reduced to the results achieved after “training.” This is so because the human mind tends to wander off while doing more complicated tasks and thus miss out on important details. There has been no study of the technique for the improvement of performance at work or personal level.

One cannot expect to be able to adjust the efficiency of the system by merely using a simple timer or only changing the setting of the “25-minute timer”. A Pomodoro time management program is not an experience or routine that one should adopt without substantial research. It is necessary to understand what one is doing and why, particularly in setting targets or tracking time.

Pomodoro Technique 

“Pomodoro” is an Italian word used to describe the methodology of dividing tasks into three to five “mini-breaks,” which the focus can be on efficiency or entertainment. It is not a particular machine but a “tool” which has been adapted to the needs of business and personal life.

To operate the Pomodoro Technique, the most crucial aspect is to determine what constitutes a ‘mini-break’. Though most people define this as thirty minutes of uninterrupted work. During which the mind can “forget” about any other job, it is not a universally accepted definition. Each person has different needs in terms of the duration of the mini-break.

Typically, a mini-break will be defined as the period after the main work or task. During which one has the chance to refresh their mind or at least allow them to relax their focus. Though this may be desirable for the rest of the day. Some people also think that mini-break can help improve their overall efficiency. For instance, a new manager might think that holding a twenty-minute meeting. Would enable him to gather more information about the goals of the company. The problem with this concept is that if he had not interrupted his work to have a discussion or another meeting. He would have lost his energy from the previous day’s work. If this had been allowed to remain uninterrupted. His productivity level would have dropped, reducing the productivity levels of the employees. He had no access to his employee’s latest productivity reports.

Benefits Of The Technique 

Thus, he can achieve the benefits of the Pomodoro Technique. By simply scheduling meetings during the periods in which the Pomodoro would last about twenty minutes. An advantage of the mini-breaks is that they do not have to be scheduled at the same time. In other words, the meetings can be held while one is multitasking. This is a benefit of the mini-breaks since the employees can be free to attend to other duties without interruption of the main task.

This gives a general overview of the different areas. That needs to be covered in a Pomodoro time management training course. One thing that the students should consider is that Pomodoros should be scheduled on the days when there is minimal traffic.

This is because time management comes with limitations. As discussed earlier, this method is not an automatic technique. It is a self-discipline technique that requires the right amount of planning and organization.

Therefore, it is essential to set expectations correctly. An employee is advised to set the goals according to his capacity. This would mean that the task should be able to be completed within the given time limit.

Aside from time management, there are other issues to be considered in scheduling pomodoros. These are the timings of the activities, starting and ending dates, the materials, and the related fees and payment procedures. In conclusion, Pomodoros training should be part of the overall skills of an employee. The knowledge gained from the training can be put to use in the workplace or at home.
